Overview

The National Agency for Drug Abuse is a governmental policy and research organization, under
the Ministry of public Health that engages with a wide range of stakeholders from across the
government, private sector, civil society and the general public towards arriving at a common
approach for prevention, mitigation and control of Alcohol and Drug Abuse in the country,
More specifically providing a common front to address the scourge which is rapidly progressing
among children, young adults and women, including undertaking public education and raises
awareness campaign against drug abuse, especially among youth in schools and other
institutions of higher learning.

Objective

The Agency provides a policy framework for sustainable, multi-sectoral and balanced approach in the management of Alcohol and Drug Abuse to improve behavioral health through evidence-based prevention approaches.

The Agency places an emphasis on community-based prevention programs, early intervention programs Includes Awareness creation; policy development and dissemination; conduct scientific research, monitoring, evaluation, reporting and training.

We are dedicated to advancing scientific investigation on the etiology and prevention of social, physical and mental health, and academic problems and on the translation of that information to promote health and well being.

We are working with Partners communities includes scientists, practitioners, advocates, administrators, and policy makers to provide tools and information to effectively address drug abuse and alcohol problems including a broad range of services in health promotion and harm reduction, early intervention, treatment and continuing care programs.

  • Providing national leadership in the development of policies, programs, and services to prevent the onset of illegal drug use, prescription drug misuse and abuse, alcohol misuse and abuse, and underage alcohol and tobacco use.
  • Carry out public education on alcohol and drug abuse directly and in collaboration with other
    public or private bodies and institutions.
  • Coordinate and facilitate public participation in the control of alcohol and drug abuse;
  • Coordinate and facilitate inter-agency collaboration and liaison among lead agencies
    responsible for alcohol and drug demand reduction;
  • In collaboration with other lead agencies, facilitate and promote the monitoring and surveillance of national and international emerging trends and patterns in the production, manufacture, sale, consumption, trafficking, promotion of alcohol and drugs of abuse;
  • In collaboration with other lead agencies, provide and facilitate the development and operation of rehabilitation facilities, programs and standards for persons with substance use disorders;

  • Coordinate and facilitate in collaboration with other lead agencies and non-state actors the formulation of national policies, laws, and plans of action on control of alcohol and drug abuse and facilitating their implementation, enforcement, continuous review, monitoring, and
    evaluation;
  • In collaboration with other public and private agencies, facilitate, conduct, promote and coordinate research and dissemination of findings on data on alcohol and drug abuse and serve as the repository of such data;
  • To assist and support the governments in developing and implementing policies, laws, plans of action on control of drug abuse.
  • Promoting effective substance abuse prevention practices that enable states, communities, and other organizations to apply prevention knowledge effectively.
  • Provides communities, clinicians, policy-makers and others with the information and tools to incorporate evidence-based practices into their communities.
  • The development and implementation of the National Drug Control Strategy and policy to addressing addiction and the overdose epidemic.
